India’s Domestic Protectionist Policy Means Its Solar Industry May Not Qualify for Subsidies Using Imported Solar Cells |
published: 2019-11-25 11:34 |
Still remember the import duty imposed on foreign-made solar cells by the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry back in 2018? To protect the domestic photovoltaic industry, the Ministry levied a 25% first-year tariff on imported cells. Recently, India is rolling out a brand new set of policies that will proactively reduce the country’s reliance on imported cells. The idea here is to bolster the Indian solar cell manufacturing industry. ...  more

Solar Conversion Efficiency Raised by 25% via Breakthrough Use of Infrared-Modulating Films |
published: 2019-11-21 9:30 |
Silicon-based solar panels currently on the market are unable to convert all radiations on the electromagnetic spectrum, such as infrared, which has a relatively long wavelength, so the panels’ energy conversion efficiency tops out at 30%. In response to this, researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology have developed a new type of solar cell design by applying a thin film over existing solar cells, which can increase their energy conversion rate by an estimated 25%. Their findings are published in the scientific journal Nanoscale. ...  more
