According to Storage Discover, on February 4, 2025, Nikkei News and several other media outlets reported that Tesla (TSLA.O) has entered into a partnership with Japanese financial services group ORIX to provide a Megapack energy storage system with a total capacity of 548 megawatt-hours (MWh) for its energy storage plant in Yonehara City, Shiga Prefecture, central Japan. The project, which is expected to be operational by 2027, will be one of the largest energy storage facilities in Japan, helping the country address the challenge of renewable energy volatility and accelerate decarbonization.

The project reportedly has a capacity of 134MW/548MWh, using 142 Tesla Megapack units with a stand-alone capacity of 3.86MWh. The project site is located in the Koudou area of Yonehara City, Shiga Prefecture, and is planned to take advantage of the local geographic conditions to optimize access to the grid, balance the supply and demand for electricity in Japan, support the integration of solar energy, wind power, and other renewable energy sources into the grid, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

It is reported that the project won the bidding in the 2023 Japanese long-term decarbonized power auction, which is the largest-scale project in the energy storage field, highlighting the Japanese government's strategic emphasis on energy storage technology. ORIX, as an integrated financial group, is leading a large-scale energy storage infrastructure for the first time, marking the deep involvement of Japanese private capital in the energy transition. Tesla will use this project to further strengthen its position in the Asia-Pacific energy storage market, doubling its global energy storage deployment to 31.4GWh by 2024.
