Recently, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a major investment memorandum with the Indian desert state of Rajasthan, aiming to invest in the development of renewable energy projects with a total installed capacity of up to 60GW. Solar, wind and hybrid energy sources will be utilised primarily in the western region of Rajasthan. According to the MoU signed with the Rajasthan government, the project will be launched prior to the ‘Revitalising Rajasthan’ investment summit and will include the construction of solar, wind and hybrid energy projects.

The programme, understood to be worth around Rs 3 trillion ($36 billion), is part of a broader investment partnership between the UAE and India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), and is a key step in upgrading Rajasthan's renewable energy capacity and helping India to achieve its wider clean energy goals. No specific details were disclosed in the official statement. According to the UAE Ministry of Investment, the right developer will be assigned to implement this ‘landmark project’ and will work closely with the relevant Indian authorities.

The preferred location of the project is in the western part of Rajasthan, including the districts of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, etc. The vast desert topography and abundant sunshine resources make these areas ideal for renewable energy development.
