Germany generated 3.4GW of solar power in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024, down 17 per cent year-on-year, according to data published by the German Federal Network Agency Bundesnetzagentur.

At the end of September 2024, Germany's cumulative solar power generation was 94.3 GW. 1,519 MW was installed in July, 906 MW in August, and 960 MW in September. mercom reported Germany's PV installation in the second quarter of this year at 3.4 GW, which was later changed to 3.8 GW.

Under Germany's Renewable Energy Act programme, the cumulative solar installation target is 88GW by the end of 2024, 128GW by 2026, 172GW by 2028 and 215GW by 2030.

Germany's latest tender for 583MW of renewable energy projects saw bids totalling 1,856MW, with the total amount of subscriptions over-subscribed by 218%. Of the 154 bids submitted, 50 were awarded contracts for 587MW of PV + storage projects.

Offers in the auction ranged from €0.0674 (~$0.072)/KWh to €0.0745 (~$0.080)/KWh, which is below the maximum tariff of €0.0918 (~$0.098)/KWh.

In 2023, Germany's total installed solar capacity soared to a record 14.2GW, a 91 per cent increase on the previous year.

At the same time, for the first time, renewable energy generation accounts for the majority of Germany's electricity consumption, accounting for nearly 59.7 per cent of public net generation in 2023.

In August, the German government approved a $63.3 billion green investment programme to help renewable energy expansion and reduce carbon emissions.

Last year, the German federal network agency lowered the price cap for rooftop solar auctions in 2024 to €0.105 (about $0.120) per KWh, down from €0.1125 (about $0.12) per KWh in 2023.The price cap for onshore wind and ground-mounted solar (€0.735 (about $0.80) per KWh) will remain unchanged from 2023.

Maximum prices for rooftop solar have been lowered by falling project costs. In the last auction round in 2023, not many bids exceeded €0.105 (~$0.12)/KWh.
