Canadian Solar's energy storage subsidiary, CSI Energy Storage, announced on October 1, 2024, that it had secured an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to deliver a 98 MW/312 MWh DC-coupled battery energy storage system for the Huatacondo project in Chile.

The project is being developed by AustrianSolar Chile Cuatro Sp (ASC4), a subsidiary of Japan's Sojitz Corporation and Shikoku Electric Power Company. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025.

The Huatacondo project will utilize CSI Energy Storage's latest SolBank 3.0 energy storage solution. Under the EPC contract, CSI Energy Storage will manage all civil and electrical infrastructure for the project. Toshinori Kawahara, General Manager of ASC4, stated, “The construction of this energy storage project is an important milestone for ASC4. We are excited to contribute to the stable power supply in northern Chile.” Colin Parkin, President of CSI Energy Storage, commented, “This will be our first energy storage project delivered in Chile, and we are delighted to help Chile achieve its goal of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2050. This project in Chile's Tarapacá region not only expands our global business reach but also demonstrates our commitment to providing reliable and efficient energy solutions to global markets.”

CSI Energy Storage's SolBank 3.0 is known for its exceptional performance and safety. It is equipped with high-density lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a battery management system (BMS) with active balancing functionality, and an advanced liquid cooling management system. Its compact design and rated storage capacity of over 5 MWh per 20-foot container significantly reduce land costs.

SolBank 3.0 is rated IP55, allowing it to withstand harsh weather conditions and ensure stable operation in the variable climate of the Andes. Additionally, SolBank 3.0 is capable of operating efficiently across a wide temperature range, enhancing its durability and making it an ideal choice for challenging environments.
