According to the Australian Clean Energy Regulator's (CER) Quarterly Carbon Market Report (QCMR) for the second quarter of 2024, Australia is likely to add more than 7GW of new renewable energy installations by the end of 2024, due to an upward revision of first-generation large-scale wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) estimates of generation from 3GW to 4GW, as well as an estimated addition of 3.1GW of small-scale rooftop solar.
In the first six months of this year, Australian households added 141,364 rooftop solar systems to the national grid, with a total generating capacity of 1.3 GW. Rooftop solar PV is also expected to replace coal-fired power generation within the current decade.
The Clean Energy Council CEC said that the cumulative installed capacity of rooftop solar power facilities in Australia amounted to 24.4GW, which will exceed the total installed capacity of 25GW by the end of 2024, noting that rooftop photovoltaic (PV) capacity has already surpassed that of coal-fired power generation. The total installed capacity of black and lignite coal in the fiscal year 2023-24 was 21.3GW.The CEC also noted that the total capacity of rooftop PV in the country is expected to exceed that of black and brown coal.
Mark Williamson, Acting Chairman of CER, said, “New power station capacity approved under the Large Scale Renewable Energy Target is increasing.”
In the first half of 2024, 1.5GW of large-scale renewable power station capacity was approved. a further 2.5GW was under assessment at the end of the second quarter of 2024.
Final investment decisions in large-scale renewables continued to increase this year. 1.8GW of capacity was reached in the first half of 2024, surpassing the 1.6GW reached in 2023.
Large-scale generation certificate (LGC) holdings increased by 7.4 million to 28.5 million at the end of the second quarter of 2024.
New rooftop solar installations across Australia continue to grow at a strong rate, with 0.76GW installed in Q2 2024, 6% above Q2 2023.The number of systems installed in Q2 2024 (79,000) was also 3% higher than the same period last year.
