Based on the headquarters in Shenzhen, BYD to other parts of the expansion, layout of the action one after another into the substantive production stage. Recently, BYD in guangxi nanning layout of the two lithium project has also put into production, is expected to production capacity and the advantages of the sea will be further highlighted.
3,000-ton Lithium Carbonate Project Starts Production
On September 5, it was reported by various media and government departments in Guangxi that BYD's 30,000-ton lithium carbonate battery project in Nanning East New City has successfully commenced production, with an annual output value of 5 billion yuan.
The project, which broke ground on December 18, 2022, involves a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan and covers an area of approximately 450 acres. It is operated by Nanning BYD New Materials Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd., which was established in July 2022.
The project uses spodumene and lepidolite as raw materials and features a shared production line design to maximize resource utilization and efficiency. Once fully operational, the project is expected to produce 30,000 tons of lithium carbonate, 10,000 tons of iron phosphate, 120,000 tons of sodium sulfate, and 4,500 tons of aluminum hydroxide annually.
Located in the Liujing Industrial Park near Qinzhou Port, the project benefits from excellent transportation networks, facilitating both raw material input and product output. Notably, the lithium ore used in the project is sourced from Zimbabwe’s Arcadia Lithium Mine, which is one of the largest lithium mines in the world, with an annual production capacity of 450,000 tons of lithium concentrate.
70 GWh Capacity Established in Nanning
Since 2022, Nanning has actively embraced the new energy and new materials industry, attracting major players like BYD and DLF to set up operations. BYD has launched a series of projects in Guangxi, including the aforementioned lithium carbonate project, as well as several power and energy storage battery production projects and a comprehensive new energy vehicle testing facility. The new energy vehicle testing facility, located in Long’an County, was initially scheduled to start operations in June 2024. Additionally, BYD has established three battery and system projects in Nanning: the 45 GWh power battery and energy storage system project in the East New City Lingli Industrial Zone, the 10 GWh hybrid battery and 5 GWh new-type battery project in the ASEAN Economic Development Zone in Wuming, and the 10 GWh power battery expansion project in Yongning Industrial Park. Together, these projects will achieve a total capacity of 70 GWh, making Nanning BYD’s largest battery production base globally. The 10 GWh power battery expansion project has already been fully operational, with the other two projects partially operational.
Strategic Significance of Nanning's Development Looking back, the influx of leading new energy companies into Guangxi has significantly boosted the local industry. For instance, the presence of BYD, DLF, and other firms has greatly contributed to the development of the new energy sector in Nanning. In 2023, the city’s new energy battery industry saw an over 2,000% increase in industrial output value compared to the previous year, with a projected growth of over 40% in 2024. Additionally, Nanning entered the top 50 on the Hurun China New Energy Industry Concentration Cities list in 2023, becoming a key production base for new energy batteries in China.
The success of these enterprises in Nanning is partly due to the city’s inherent advantages. As the capital of Guangxi, Nanning has significant market potential and resource advantages, including abundant manganese ore resources, high aluminum processing capabilities, and a strong aluminum processing industry supporting the battery supply chain. Furthermore, Nanning’s strategic location as the closest provincial capital to ASEAN provides a gateway for expanding into Southeast Asia. This region is becoming a major market for domestic lithium battery companies, with major players like CATL, BYD, EVE Energy, Zhuhai Coslight, Guoxuan High-Tech, and Funeng Technology establishing a presence, and overseas companies from Japan and South Korea also intensifying their efforts in Southeast Asia. The competition in the international market is expected to heat up, and companies that establish an early presence are likely to reap the benefits.
