US PV data for H1 2024: 12GW

published: 2024-08-27 16:09

In the first half of 2024, PV leads the U.S. with 12GW of new capacity.

According to the latest report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), photovoltaic power generation accounted for 59% of all new electricity generation during this period.

In the first half of 2024, all large-scale ground-mounted technologies combined added 20.2 GW, up 3.6 GW from the same period last year.EIA expects 42.6 GW of new capacity to be installed in the second half of 2024, with 25 GW of that coming from large-scale ground-mounted PV.

By the end of 2024, 37GW of new PV capacity will be installed, which would be the highest single-year capacity ever recorded and double the 18.8GW installed in 2023. EIA's valuation differs by just 1GW from forecasts made earlier this year by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie. The latter's forecasts, however, take into account all markets in the solar industry The latter's forecast, however, takes into account all markets in the solar industry, including residential, community solar and commercial and industrial, not just large-scale ground-mounted projects.

Texas and California are the two leading states for PV, accounting for 38% of new PV capacity in the first half of 2024. Nevada has the largest number of projects coming on line during this period.

The Gemini Solar-Storage project, developed by investment fund Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners and its subsidiary, independent power producer Primergy Solar, the Gemini Solar-Storage Project has an installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity of 690 MW and is the largest project to come on stream in the United States this year.

BESS: second largest increment

At the end of June 2024, battery storage systems had the second highest capacity additions, at 4.2 GW. Battery additions were concentrated in four U.S. states: California (37% of total additions), Texas (24%), Arizona (19%), and Nevada (13%).

EIA expects BESS to add 10.8GW in the second half of 2024 and could set a single-year record of 15GW installed in one year. Texas and California currently account for 81% of the expected capacity additions to the BESS in the second half of 2024.

The Gemini Solar-Storage Project is not only the largest PV project to be commissioned in the first half of 2024, it is also the largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to be commissioned in the region, with an output of 380 MW.

Similar to the Gemini project, the second-largest BESS project, due to come online in the first half of 2024, is also a solar-storage project. Major US ground-mounted company Salt River Project (SRP) and Danish energy company Ørsted powered the Eleven Mile Solar Center project in Arizona earlier this year, which has 300MW of installed PV capacity and 300MW/1.2GWh of BESS capacity. Prior to the project's completion, the companies had signed a power purchase agreement with social media and tech giant Meta.

The 640MW Lumina solar plant in Texas is the second largest PV project to come online in the first half of 2024. The project is owned by renewable energy developer Intersect Power, which has a portfolio of 2.2GW PV projects.
