According to a report by Italia Solare, the Italian photovoltaic association, the cumulative installed PV power capacity in Italy reached 33.62 GW by the end of June 2024. In the first half of 2024, Italy added about 3.34 GW of new PV power generation capacity, which is a significant increase compared to 2.3 GW of new PV power generation capacity added during the same period of 2023. In 2023, Italy's total installed PV power capacity will be 5.23 GW, compared to 2.48 GW in 2022 and 0.94 GW in 2021.
Of the new installed capacity installed in the first half of 2024, 29% (985 MW) is from residential systems under 20 kW, 35% (1,155 MW) is from commercial and industrial systems between 20 and 200 kW, and 36% (1,201 MW) is from systems over 1 MW. The growth in large systems was driven by the connection of 17 power plants with more than 10 MW of installed capacity, totaling 540 MW.
Paolo Rocco Viscontini, president of Solar Italia, noted that progress has been made in the power plant sector, with licenses gradually leading to completed plants connected to the grid, although the process is still long.
From 297 MW in the first half of 2023 to 661 MW in the first half of 2024, there has been a significant increase of 122% in the number of connections of power plants with an installed capacity between 1 MW and 10 MW. Six regions account for 63% of the new installed capacity this year: Lombardy (554 MW), Lazio (426 MW), Veneto (329 MW), Emilia-Romagna (304 MW), Piedmont (257 MW) and Sardinia (242 MW).
In these regions, a total of 2.11 GW is connected to the grid in the first half of 2024, distributed as follows: the private sector accounts for 24% (515 MW), the commercial and industrial sector for 34% (717 MW), and the utility sector for 42% (880 MW).
