Japanese chemical producer Tokuyama has signed an agreement with Vietnam's Thanh Binh Phu My JSC to build a $30 million polysilicon plant at the Phu My 3 Industrial Park in Vietnam's Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.
According to a government news report, Tokuyama will lease five hectares of land on a leasehold basis for the plant, which will produce polysilicon for semiconductors and solar cells. The report did not disclose other technical or financial details.
The Japanese conglomerate first announced plans to invest in a polysilicon plant in Vietnam back in February this year. At the time, the company said Tokuyama would set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in Vietnam to mass produce and sell semiprocessed semiconductor-grade polysilicon products in response to its expansion plans in Malaysia.
In Malaysia, Tokuyama plans to build a polysilicon plant in partnership with South Korean polysilicon producer OCI.OCIM Sdn Bhd (OCIMSB), OCI's Malaysian subsidiary, currently operates a polysilicon plant at the Samalaju Industrial Park in Sarawak, Malaysia, which it acquired from Tokuyama in 2016.
