Sungrow signs contract for world's largest energy storage project 7.8GWh

published: 2024-07-16 17:13

On July 15, Sungrow and Saudi Arabia's AlGihaz successfully signed the world's largest energy storage project with a capacity of up to 7.8GWh!

The project is located in three sites in Saudi Arabia: Najran, Madaya and Khamis Mushait regions.

The project is large in scale, with tight delivery schedule, complex dispatching management, and high requirements for grid support and operation and maintenance. Sungrow will deploy more than 1,500 PowerTitan2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage systems for this project. It is expected to start delivery in 2024 and achieve full capacity grid-connected operation in 2025. The project will effectively improve the stability and reliability of Saudi Arabia's power grid and continue to promote the realization of Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030".

PowerTitan2.0 adopts an integrated AC storage design with high energy density, which can help customers save 55% of land area. The equipment can be pre-installed and pre-commissioned before leaving the factory, and it can be connected to the grid when it arrives at the station. At the same time, relying on Sungrow's intelligent manufacturing capabilities and global sales and service system, it can meet the project's extremely fast delivery needs.

In addition, this project is equipped with nearly 7.8 million battery cells. In order to solve the huge challenges of operation and maintenance, Sungrow uses intelligent EMS and BMS systems to ensure efficient and safe operation from battery cells to PACK to system and then to energy storage power stations. During the project design and construction, Sungrow will also carry out system simulation work, conduct field-level grid HIL experiments, simulate the actual situation of the local grid, verify the consistency of field-level strategies, and ensure that the energy storage system is safely and stably connected to the Saudi grid. After the project is connected to the grid, it is expected to achieve a long life cycle of more than 15 years, ensuring stable and efficient returns for the power station.

PowerTitan2.0 is the world's first energy storage system to achieve an extremely simple structure of "AC block integration". By integrating battery cells with PCS, the efficiency, performance, safety and intelligence level of the system are improved.

Since its release at the end of October 2023, PowerTitan2.0 has implemented multiple grid-side, power supply-side and user-side projects in Europe, Jiangxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Hebei, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places. Especially in some user-side energy storage projects with intensive personnel and assets, it has fully accepted the test of grid dispatching.

China Huaneng's first large-scale user-side energy storage project-Huaneng Longteng Special Steel 20MW/40MWh user-side energy storage project adopts PowerTitan2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage system. The project adopts an integrated construction mode of "photovoltaic + energy storage + electricity sales", and is expected to generate 18.57 million kWh of electricity annually. Through the "low-valley charging and peak discharging" mode, two charges and two discharges per day, the high electricity purchase cost of the steel plant is greatly reduced, and the dual value of cost reduction and carbon reduction is achieved. The economic benefits of the power station are estimated to reach 66.47 million yuan.
