Lightrock Power announced recently that it plans to develop a 400MW PV project in the UK. Further details about the project have yet to be announced. However, the company has stressed that it will be “wildlife-friendly” and play a role in helping the UK to wean off the supply of natural gas from Russia.
Established in 2017 and based in the UK, Lightrock is a small developer of PV and energy storage projects. According to its statement, it has recently secured three PV projects in addition to “15 programs” in the pipeline. The company has further claimed that it has “100 percent success rate in planning”.
Chris Sowerbutts, co-founder of Lightrock Power, said that rising fuel prices had already been a major issue for many months before the Ukraine crisis, which only exacerbated this trend. Sowerbutts added that it is time to establish local sources of renewable energy due to the advantages pertaining to cost and supply security.
The company in its statement also pointed out that it initiated early community consultation for its Upper Leigh Solar Farm Project in March. Located in Staffordshire, this project is set to have a generation capacity of 49MW. The company aims to submit a planning application this spring and commence construction in the summer of 2026. Lightrock is also developing another 49MW ground-mounted PV project in North Yorkshire. Named Leeming Solar PV Park, it is expected to supply enough electricity to meet the demand of 15,000 homes.
