Taiwan PESC Forms to Take On Global Electric Vehicle and 5G Supply Chains

published: 2022-02-17 9:30

Global energy conservation, carbon reduction, and 5G technology trends have unleashed business opportunities for electric vehicles and green energy. A new generation of semiconductors has become a key material that countries are seeking to obtain for its high energy conversion efficiency, high frequency, and high power characteristics. It is also an opportunity for the next wave of industrial growth. ITRI has partnered with a number of domestic semiconductor and ICT industry manufacturers to set up the "Power Electronics System Research and Development Consortium (PESC)" to seize a key position in the global energy and communications market supply chain.

It is reported that there are four SIG platforms in the PESC. The first "Key Electronic Control Technology Platform for Electric Assisted Bicycles" will integrate hub motors, controllers, Si MOS IPM drive modules, pedaling power sensing, and plans to apply this advanced power system in a demonstration at the ITRI.

The second "Electric Vehicle Motor Drive Control Technology Platform" will integrate power component manufacturers, key component and material manufacturers, system manufacturers, and end-user vehicle manufacturers to build a complete supply chain for the domestic light electric vehicle industry. The third "high-voltage power modularization technology platform for automotive and industrial control" is for a new generation of semiconductor components and materials, and after one applicability design and simulation analysis of the public version module, trial production and system verification are carried out.

The fourth "High-Frequency Antenna Packaging and Testing Technology Platform" focuses on the development trends of packaging technology, producing products that meet higher operating frequencies, high thermal conductivity and low dielectric loss materials/substrates, multi-chip integrated packaging, thinning, and heat dissipation. The industry has improved advanced packaging technology and market share and will actively achieve the goal of self-determination of B5G / 6G key components in the future, making Taiwan an exporter of key B5G / 6G components.

PESC President and General Director of the ITRI Electronic & Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories, Wu Chih-I stated that a new generation of semiconductors will meet the needs of higher endurance, lower energy consumption, high power and high current to become the key engine in "Green New Deal" industries such as electric vehicles and new energy applications and also the cornerstone for the realization of "Digital New Deal" industries such as AI, 5G communications, data centers, aerospace satellites, and other fields.

Wu Chih-I further explained that the purpose of the four SIG operating groups under the PESC is to not only provide upstream manufacturers with verification of new chips or packaging materials, but also to assist downstream industries in expanding their exports of electric vehicles, industrial energy conservation, new energy, power grid energy storage equipment, and 5G communication. In addition, the operating groups will conduct product verification and field implementation to create a complete upstream to downstream industrial chain. In the future, the platform will link key technologies for industrial rollout, increase market share, and showcase key components to self-determine energy and international competitiveness.
