IHI Terrasun Solutions has entered into an agreement with Leeward Renewable Energy to provide energy storage solutions for two of Leeward’s projects – Willow Springs 3 and Chaparral Solar. Both are located in Kern County, California, and both are PV-plus-storage facilities. In addition to hardware and software, Terrasun will also provide the related lifecycle (O&M) services. The construction of the two facilities is scheduled for commencement this December and completion next December. This news was first reported by website Solar Power World.
Together, Willow Springs 3 and Chaparral Solar will have a generation capacity of 174MW and a storage capacity of 88MW/352MWh. For each project, Terrasun will set up and operate the energy storage portion, thus helping end users access renewable electricity and maintain a carbon-neutral business portfolio.
Terrasun is the energy storage subsidiary of IHI America, which in turn is under the control of IHI or Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, a major Japanese engineering company. Other renewable news websites reported this June that Terrasun has formed a business partnership with battery supplier SK Innovation. Leeward Renewable Energy develops wind farms, PV power plants, and energy storage plants. Under the control of the infrastructure investment arm of OMERS, Leeward currently operates more than 2,000MW of generation assets and has around 17GW of projects in development.
Commenting on this deal, Jamal Burki, president of Terrasun, said that his team is looking forward to collaborating with Leeward on the two projects. He added that Terrasun has been achieving successes in the distributed generation segment, and the flexible technologies and services that they are offering are adaptable to utility-scale projects. Burki is “enthused with the collaborative spirit” of both sides in jointly developing energy storage solutions, and he anticipates more progress going forward.
Terrasun touts that its “technology-agnostic approach” enables the development of a wide-range of PV-plus-storage solutions. The company combines top-tier technologies from the battery, inverter, and intelligent control sections to create ideal packages that fit its clients’ needs. Furthermore, Terrasun also provides software and O&M services to ensure that its projects will report stable and attractive financial results over the long run.
Mark Hensley, senior vice president of Project Execution for Leeward, commented that Terransun’s solutions and services will improve the capabilities of his company’s renewable energy projects with respect to dispatching power to end users. Hensley added that Leeward is “proud to collaborate with Terrasun” in advancing the development of PV-plus-storage facilities.
