IKEA is going to open its Memphis store in Tennessee in late Fall 2016. The store’s rooftop has been installed a 1.46MW PV array and will become the state’s largest rooftop PV system when being opened.
IKEA selected Hannah Solar, an Atlanta-based EPC service supplier, to design and install IKEA Memphis’ customized solar power system. Hannah Solar installed 4,424 solar paned atop of the rooftop, and the array is expected to generate approximately 2,000,000kWh of clean electricity per year, offsetting 1,406 tons of CO2 emissions.
“Installing the solar panels is another exciting and sustainable step in the progress towards opening the future IKEA Memphis,” said Trisha Bevering, store manager. “IKEA strives to create a sustainable life for communities where we operate, and IKEA Memphis is adding to this goal with Tennessee’s largest rooftop solar array.”
The Memphis rooftop PV array represents the 44th solar project for IKEA in the U.S., contributing to the IKEA solar presence atop nearly 90% of its U.S. locations, with a total generation goal of more than 40MW. IKEA owns and operates each of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings and globally allocated $2.5 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2020, reinforcing its confidence and investment in solar photovoltaic technology.
