Carport at Buck Institute for Research on Aging Turns Solar-harvesting

EDF Renewable Energy (EDF RE), MCE and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging jointly celebrated the completion on a 1.1MW solar carport for Buck Institute. The solar carport is the largest solar PV facility in local country.

EDF RE and MCE signed the 32.6MWp (24MWac) Cottonwood Solar contract in 2011, which consists of two large-scale ground-mounted PV projects in California and this carport project. The previous projects, located in Kern and Kings in California, became operational in April 2015, while the solar carport was completed on May 12 2016 and was acquired by Dominion.

During the six-month construction phase, the project created jobs through Cupertino Electric and the local IBEW. Power generated from the solar carport will be delivered directly to MCE’s customers, including Buck Institute, under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

Brian Kennedy, PhD, Buck Institute president and CEO, commented, “We are extremely excited and grateful to be part of this project. It’s also great that the Buck gets to be part of the solution when it comes to dealing with climate change and the need to reduce energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.”

EDF RE is one of the largest renewable energy developers in North America. The company has developed 8GW of wind, solar, biomass and biogas projects throughout U.S., Canada and Mexico.
