Renewable Energy Systems (RES), a wind, solar, transmission and energy storage projects developer, engineer and constructor, has completed construction on the McHenry Storage Project, in McHenry, Illinois. The project, owned by EDF Renewable Energy, reached commercial operation on December 20, 2015. RES utilizes eleven containers of lithium ion batteries manufactured by BYD.
McHenry is the sixth energy storage project completed by RES, offering a system of 20 MW nameplate and 40 MW of flexible capacity. The company has now constructed more than 85MW of flexible resources with a total +/- range of more than 170MW, and 33MWh of energy storage either in operation or under construction across North America, ranking near the top of the industry.
"RES is a proven market leader in delivering energy storage projects and solutions to economically solve grid reliability challenges for our customers," said Matthew Krivos, Director, Energy Storage for RES. "We are pleased to once again work with EDF and the Illinois community to successfully construct an energy storage project."
RES has now constructed battery storage systems in three grid operator jurisdictions and has contracted with utilities, independent power producers and financial investors.
