The 34MWdc Bhatinda solar power project in Punjab, India has been commissioned on August 3. The project is the state’s largest solar facility, and the power generated from it will be transmitted through the Punjab state grid over the next 25 years. Welspun Renewables, the nation’s largest solar energy generator, won the construction deal and successfully built it five months ahead the schedule.

The Bhatinda Project covers a land of approximately 140 acres in the state’s Bhatinda district. The project will transmit 48,000,000kWh of clean electricity through the grid every year, and will offset more than 1,300,000 tons of CO2 among its 25-year lifespan.

In response to Punjab state’s growing energy demands, a cumulative 4,200 MW solar target has been announced for the state. The state signs development contracts with several solar developers include Welspun Solar Punjab Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Welspun Renewables, through the Punjab capacity auction.

Mr. Vineet Mittal, Vice Chairman Welspun Renewables said, ““More than ever we need to exponentially build up the country’s renewable energy quotient Development is a necessity and to make it sustainable it has to be driven by clean emission-free energy. Developed well within committed timelines, our projects are benchmarks in project management and optimal plant performance. Our 34 MWdc solar power plant is our first step in the state in this direction. While powering the state’s industries, we will also be working with our neighboring communities towards sustainable living.”

Welspun Renewables has also signed an MoU for setting up an additional 151MW of solar capacity.
