AEG Power Solutions, a global provider of UPS systems and power electronic solutions for industrial, commercial, renewable and distributed energy, will showcase several energy storage systems and its off-grid power solution Power Island in booth B1.641 at Intersolar Europe in Munich, Germany from June 4 to 6, 2014.
Short term storage solution: Battery Energy Storage System
AEG PS will present its MW-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) for short-term energy storage, designed to facilitate the transition to new ways of generating and distributing electricity. BESS offers grid stabilization and increased power quality, namely four-quadrant operation, peak shaving and load balancing, day to night shifting of renewable PV energy, and reliable PV power supply.
Depending on the applied battery technology, BESS can be used for hourly or daily and up to weekly transfer of renewable energy.
Long term storage solution: Power-to-Gas
H2 is becoming increasingly recognized as an important part of the missing link between volatile energy sources and a reliable energy supply for the future of the green energy revolution. Hydrogen brings many benefits because it can be generated, stored and used without producing any hazardous chemicals or emissions, only oxygen and water are emitted. Decentralized installed electrolysers operate when excess energy is available in the grid.
AEG Power Solutions high efficiency rectifier is part of the electrolysis process. The rectifier is installed between the power plant and the high efficiency electrolyser. The rectifier’s key role is to supply a tightly regulated direct current to the electrolyser. The rectifier ensures high precision, high efficiency, reliable power delivery to the electrolyser with maximum power factor at its input. The technology platform used is directly derived from power control systems used in the polysilicon manufacturing process.
The Power-to-Gas technology allows monthly or seasonal transfer of renewable energy.
Integrated Systems: Off-Grid Power Solution:
One of the biggest challenges of the 21st century is the rural electrification of the 1.3 billion people currently living without access to the electric grid. Until recent years, the only viable way of supplying electricity to remote areas was via a conventional genset. This has led to the installation of more than 50,000 gensets worldwide for this purpose. In order to integrate more than 30 % of PV renewable energy, and fully benefit from the low electricity costs and ecological benefits, a stabilization system is required namely the AEG PS “Power Island”, a typical fully integrated Diesel/PV hybrid application. The diesel consumption in a PV/hybrid combination is considerably less than in a pure diesel system, thus offering an economically attractive solution available today.
The AEG PS Power Island is a turnkey solution that integrates all the required components to generate and supply the electrical power for a small village or industrial site, or to balance an existing weak grid. The electrification system is off-grid capable, relies predominantly on renewable energies and is inherently safe through its multiple redundancies.
The heart of the Power Island, the Central Micro Grid Converter (CMGC) is based on an uninterruptable power supply system and is thus capable of supporting building and stabilizing a three-phase voltage system. The intelligent brain of the system is the LMU (Local Management Unit) which optimizes the battery use and minimizes the Diesel fuel consumption in order to achieve best results in terms of profitability and CO2 footprint.
AEG PS’ Power Island is suited for various applications in the different fields, where hybrid power solutions will be implemented in the future. The most interesting utilization currently is on island grids as a diesel fuel substitution.
