To address this challenge, the Iranian government recently announced a significant energy transition plan: all national government agencies will gradually disconnect from the national grid and fully switch to off-grid photovoltaic power supply.
Government Agencies Take the Lead in Switching to Photovoltaics
According to the plan of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization of Iran (SATBA), all government office buildings will gradually install photovoltaic power generation systems to achieve self-sufficiency in electricity. In the next phase, eligible schools, universities, and stadiums will also be equipped with photovoltaics, further expanding the application of renewable energy.
Renewable Energy Generation Capacity to Increase 25 Times Within Three Years
According to recent data released by the National Iranian Power Company, renewable energy currently accounts for only 1.8% of the country's total installed power generation capacity of 94.5 GW. Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi stated at a conference that the Iranian government will complete an ambitious energy strategic goal: to add approximately 11.5 GW of solar power installed capacity by March 2026, and to increase renewable energy production capacity to 25 times its current level within the next three years. To accelerate the development of photovoltaics in Iran, the country has approved applications from domestic and foreign investors to build 35 GW of renewable energy power plant projects.
Tehran, the capital of Iran, has an average daily sunshine duration of 2,800 to 3,200 hours per year, averaging about 8 hours per day, and a solar radiation intensity of 4.5 to 5.5 kWh/m², ranking among the regions with the richest solar energy resources globally. This natural advantage provides a solid foundation for large-scale solar power generation.
Financial Support
To ensure the smooth progress of renewable energy projects, the Iranian government announced that it will provide up to $5 billion in preferential loans through the National Sovereign Wealth Fund for the construction of photovoltaic power plants over the next four years.
