According to Wechat Official Account @EnergyScope, Emilio Manzoni, Head of PV and Energy Storage Business at Sungrow Italy, recently provided a detailed introduction to the company's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) fire safety measures and the promising prospects of the burgeoning energy storage market in Italy.
Currently, the Italian energy storage market is in a phase of rapid development, with project prices stabilizing at around €110 (approximately $125 USD) per kilowatt, predominantly driven by utility-scale projects.
Manzoni pointed out that the commercial and industrial (C&I) energy storage market is performing strongly, with businesses maintaining continuous enthusiasm for installing PV and energy storage systems. This segment also benefits from policy support such as agricultural PV, energy communities, and the "Industry 5.0" manufacturing energy transition plan with a total investment of €6.3 billion.
It was revealed that Sungrow has cumulatively delivered approximately 1.6GW of products in Italy in recent years, maintaining stable sales performance.
Regarding market expansion, Sungrow has successfully signed contracts for a total of 140MW of new energy storage systems through three grid capacity procurement auctions and is currently in negotiations for an additional 150MW of projects.
The company's annual energy storage production capacity reaches 73GWh, while the Italian capacity auction market continues to expand. This year's procurement rounds have already secured 174MW of new generation and storage capacity, with auction sizes of 140MW and 590MW planned for 2026 and 2027, respectively.
In terms of safety technology, Manzoni emphasized that Sungrow is the only company globally that has conducted combustion tests on its energy storage systems, verifying their safety performance by igniting a battery container.
Test results showed that thanks to the 120-minute long-lasting fire suppression system and fireproof container design, the fire could be completely contained within a single container without spreading to the entire energy storage system, fully complying with Italy's strict "no propagation from a single container fire" safety standards.
Sungrow emphasized that its energy storage systems undergo over 140 rigorous safety tests. Manzoni stated that the company offers highly integrated "plug-and-play" solutions for both C&I and large-scale power plant scenarios. These solutions integrate power distribution units, battery modules, fire suppression and cooling systems, and inverters into standard containers or cabinets, enabling rapid deployment and efficient operation and maintenance.
