On March 13, Thailand’s National Committee on Enhancing the Competitiveness of Targeted Industries approved an investment of over $1 billion (approximately RMB 7.244 billion) by a subsidiary of Sunwoda. The investment aims to establish battery production facilities for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS) in Thailand.
This significant investment will strengthen Thailand’s local supply chain and support the development of the country’s EV industry.
Sunwoda Automotive Energy Technology (Thailand) Co., Ltd. plans to build a production base in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). The first factory, located in Chonburi province, will specifically produce lithium-ion batteries for EV manufacturers.
According to the Secretary-General of the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), "This move marks a significant milestone in the development of Thailand's EV supply chain. Localizing battery production will greatly solidify Thailand’s position as a manufacturing hub for EVs and hybrid vehicles while enhancing national competitiveness. The project will also drive the widespread adoption of ESS and solar technologies in Thailand and facilitate knowledge transfer by employing thousands of Thai engineers and workers."
The construction of Sunwoda’s first factory in Thailand is progressing steadily. Once operational, it is expected to employ over 1,000 workers. The entire project will encompass manufacturing and R&D, creating more job opportunities, including positions for a large number of local engineers and researchers.
Notably, several major Chinese EV manufacturers, including BYD, SAIC Motor, Great Wall Motors, and GAC Aion, have already established production bases in Thailand. Chongqing Changan Automobile is set to open its Thai factory within weeks, while Chery Automobile is also constructing a production facility in the country. Thailand’s EV ecosystem is rapidly expanding, encompassing a growing charging station network, localized production of charging piles, key automotive components manufacturing, and battery pack and module assembly.
