According to foreign media reports, a few days ago the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) launched a 150MW/500MWh energy storage project tender in Kerala.
The tender was issued by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), a state-owned enterprise managed by India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), with a deadline of February 4, 2025 for bids.
The tender is for a single-site battery energy storage system and will be supported by Viability Gap Funding (VGF) from the Government of India. Under the Government of India's Union Budget for the year 2023-2024, the VGF will provide financial support for the standalone deployment of 4GWh battery energy storage systems, which is approximately 40% of the total capital expenditure required for the project.
According to India's National Power Plan, India will need 74GW/411GWh of energy storage by 2032. Of this, pumped storage will amount to 175.18GWh and electrochemical storage will be 236.22GWh, thus ensuring a stable supply of renewable energy.
TrendForce analysts said that India's current energy storage deployment is still in the early stages of the start-up phase, the installed capacity is limited, and the early main small-scale industrial and commercial energy storage. Driven by subsidies and government-led bidding and other policies, large-scale new energy distribution storage (power side) and grid-side projects are expected to accelerate the release of energy storage projects will become the main deployment scenario in India.
Previously, according to foreign media, India's new and renewable energy sector (MNRE) may soon require new renewable energy projects to be equipped with 10% battery storage. The move is aimed at solving the problem of intermittent supply of renewable energy to ensure that the power supply around the clock.
