According to Official Account @gh_50df44b75fe0, as of now, 14 companies are undergoing maintenance or operating at reduced loads. Within this month, one company’s Sichuan and Yunnan bases are gradually cutting production, another company has partially resumed production, though the increase remains limited, and a newly commissioned company is steadily ramping up its capacity.
In terms of production, polysilicon output in November was 133,000 tons, corresponding to 58-60 GW of modules. The production forecast for December is approximately 105,000 tons, equivalent to 46-48 GW of modules, representing a month-on-month decline of 21%.
Regarding newly commissioned capacities, Baofeng Energy launched the first phase of its silicon materials project in Guazhou, Gansu Province, on November 17, 2023, with an annual capacity of 50,000 tons of polysilicon and 2.5 GW of crystal pulling and slicing. Hoshine Silicon plans to achieve mass production of its first 100,000-ton high-purity polysilicon production line in January 2024, while another 100,000-ton production line is preparing for trial operation and is expected to begin joint commissioning in February 2024.
For planned new capacity, Daqo New Energy plans to invest RMB 15 billion in Shihezi to build a 100,000-ton polysilicon and supporting silicon materials facility, to be constructed in two phases, each with an annual capacity of 50,000 tons of polysilicon and related projects. Baofeng Energy has also filed an environmental impact assessment document for the second phase of its silicon materials project, with the first phase including annual capacities of 150,000 tons of industrial silicon and 50,000 tons of polysilicon. Tongwei Co. plans to invest RMB 28 billion in Ordos City to build an integrated green substrate project, which will include annual capacities of 500,000 tons of industrial silicon and 400,000 tons of high-purity silicon, along with supporting facilities. Additionally, Xuyang Group began construction of its silicon PV integration project on March 27, 2024.
However, some newly planned capacities have been delayed. The second phase of Daqo New Energy’s 200,000-ton high-purity polysilicon project, with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons, has been postponed to the second quarter of 2024. Zhonglai Co.’s project, which includes annual capacities of 200,000 tons of industrial silicon and 100,000 tons of high-purity polysilicon, has also been temporarily suspended.
For existing capacity, Norwegian Crystals and Norsun have announced their exit from the polysilicon business. REC Silicon has also shut down two polysilicon plants in Norway, with a combined capacity of 7,000 tons, due to high electricity costs. Additionally, TCL Zhonghuan plans to transfer its 27% stake in the silicon materials company Xinjiang Golden Resources to Guotong Trust. REC Silicon is also selling its 15% stake in Tianhong Ruike, while REC Solar Norway AS’s 100% equity has been sold to India’s Reliance Industries.
The polysilicon industry is currently undergoing a critical phase of capacity adjustment, with a mix of new capacity launches and plans, as well as delays, suspensions, and equity transfers of certain projects.
