On December 10, Stellantis and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) announced an agreement to jointly invest up to €4.1 billion in establishing a joint venture to construct a large lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant in Zaragoza, Spain. The facility will be designed to achieve full carbon neutrality, with a phased investment plan to ensure orderly implementation
The plant is expected to commence production at Stellantis’ Zaragoza manufacturing site by the end of 2026, with an annual capacity of up to 50 GWh, subject to the development of the European electric vehicle market and continued support from the Spanish government and the European Union. The joint venture, equally owned by CATL and Stellantis, aims to enhance Stellantis' competitive advantage in LFP batteries within Europe. In November 2023, Stellantis and CATL signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to supply localized LFP battery cells and modules for Stellantis' electric vehicle manufacturing in Europe. The two companies also committed to long-term cooperation on two strategic fronts: developing a bold technology roadmap to support Stellantis' advanced electric vehicles and actively exploring new opportunities to enhance the battery value chain.

CATL has already launched two new factories in Germany and Hungary, bringing its advanced battery manufacturing technologies to Europe. The new Zaragoza plant will further strengthen CATL's ability to support clients in achieving climate goals and underscore its commitment to advancing electric mobility and energy transition in Europe and globally.
Stellantis is pursuing a diversified battery strategy that includes dual-chemistry systems—nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries and LFP batteries—to serve all customer needs, while actively exploring innovative battery cell and pack technologies.
Subject to customary regulatory conditions and approvals, the transaction is expected to close in 2025.
