Driven by technological advances and cost reductions, India's photovoltaic installed capacity has increased significantly in recent years. As of July 2024, India's photovoltaic installed capacity has reached 87.207GW, accounting for more than 50% of its total renewable energy installed capacity (excluding large hydropower). In July 2024 alone, India added more than 2.191 GW of photovoltaic installed capacity, showing its firm determination to expand its renewable energy base. So far, India's total renewable energy installed capacity exceeds 150 GW, of which photovoltaic and wind power contribute 89.36% of the total.
The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has resumed the implementation of the Photovoltaic Module Approved Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) order from April 1, 2024. The move is aimed at ensuring high-quality and reliable photovoltaic installations, especially for government-funded projects.
As of now, India has a total installed capacity of about 134.283 GW of photovoltaic and wind power. This highlights India's important role in global renewable energy applications. Photovoltaic energy is critical to India's sustainable development goals and climate change mitigation efforts. It significantly reduces the country's carbon footprint with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. The total installed capacity of ground-mounted photovoltaics reached 67.52 GW, and the total installed capacity of rooftop distributed photovoltaics currently reached 13.40 GW. These photovoltaic systems installed on residential, commercial and industrial roofs not only enhance energy security, but also enable individuals and businesses to support cleaner energy production.
Photovoltaics are also playing a transformative role in rural areas with limited electricity access. Off-grid solutions such as photovoltaic lights and microgrids with a total installed capacity of 3.70 GW are essential to providing electricity to remote communities and improving their living standards.
India’s success in photovoltaic energy is attributed to multiple government initiatives, technological advancements, and increased awareness of the benefits of renewable energy. With photovoltaic energy accounting for more than 58.03% of India’s total renewable energy installed capacity, India has become one of the global leaders in sustainable development and clean energy transformation.
