Eurelectric, the European electricity trade association, has released the latest data on Europe's energy mix, with renewables accounting for more than half of Europe's electricity supply in the first half of this year.
Europe is decarbonizing at an unprecedented rate, with 74% of its electricity coming from "renewable and low-carbon energy sources" and 68% in 2023. Of this, renewables account for 692 TWh, or 50.39% of Europe's total electricity generation, about twice as much as fossil fuels (359 TWh). Onshore wind and hydropower are the largest contributors to this figure, generating 228.8 TWh and 220.7 TWh respectively, while solar PV generates 137 TWh.
Eurelectric said that the electricity demand figures are not good due to companies relocating abroad and slow economic growth.The EU's electricity demand in the first half of 2023 fell by 3.4% compared to the same period in 2022 and continues to remain low in the first half of 2024, at 2.6% lower than two years ago. Declining electricity demand should not mean that the EU can ignore investment in the sector.
Meanwhile, renewable energy sources accounted for 58 percent of total electricity consumption in Germany in the first half of the year, according to preliminary data from the Association of the German Energy and Water Industry (BDEW) and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW).
