This includes more than 19 GW added in May alone. With these additions, China's total installed solar PV capacity has reached approximately 690 GW.
According to China's National Energy Administration (NEA), the country's total installed solar PV capacity reached approximately 690 GW by the end of May 2024. This figure includes 79.15 GW of new installations added between January and May 2024.
The new solar PV installations in the first five months of 2024 represent an annual increase of 17.94 GW compared to the 61.21 GW added during the same period last year. In May 2024 alone, China installed 19.04 GW of new capacity, following the addition of nearly 14.37 GW in April. By the end of April 2024, the country's new PV installations had totaled 60.11 GW.
According to the NEA, China's wind power capacity grew by 19.76 GW during the first five months of this year. By the end of May 2024, the country's total installed power generation capacity reached 3.04 TW, marking an annual increase of 14.1%. This includes 690 GW of solar PV and 460 GW of wind energy, bringing the combined capacity of solar and wind to 1.15 TW. This puts China just 50 GW shy of the 1.2 TW target, which is now expected to be reached well ahead of the 2030 deadline.
