The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, a state-owned utility, is inviting expressions of interest for the design, construction, and operation of an 8.2 MW solar facility coupled with a 2 MW/4MWh battery energy storage system. This project will be situated at the site of an established microgrid in western Egypt.
The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) has launched a tender for the construction of an 8.2 MW solar power plant alongside a 2 MW/4MWh battery energy storage system in Siwa Oasis, situated in western Egypt. EEHC is seeking expressions of interest from both domestic and international firms to undertake the design, construction, and operation of this facility.
Situated within the 16-hectare expanse of Siwa Oasis, an existing microgrid and a 10 MW photovoltaic (PV) system are already in operation. The upcoming project aims to bolster the microgrid's capabilities by augmenting the current PV system, according to the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC). This initiative seeks to bolster electricity supply to rural communities in the vicinity.
Interested parties are required to electronically submit their expressions of interest to EEHC by June 3, 2024.
As outlined in the tender document, a request for proposals will follow in the summer, leading up to the contract's award in early December.
By the close of 2023, Egypt had implemented 1,836 MW of solar capacity, according to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The Egyptian government has set an ambitious goal of reaching 42% renewable energy in its energy portfolio by 2030, with solar comprising 22% of that mix. To achieve this, an estimated 31 GW of solar capacity will be necessary.
