The Philippine Department of Energy announced that at least 4.16GW of power projects will be put into operation this year through a hybrid combination of renewable and traditional energy sources. Of this, 1.99GW will come from solar projects.
The country’s Ministry of Energy also stated that by June, approximately 966.3MW will be put into operation, while approximately 494.9MW are under testing and commissioning and can already deliver power to the grid. Meanwhile, at least 590MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) will be put into use this year, of which 32.42MW are already in operation.
As of late April, 161.2MW of all power industry projects that came online this year have been fully commercialized, and 835.9MW are in the testing and commissioning stage.
The installed capacity of base load power plants is approximately 678MW, and the installed capacity of intermediate load power plants and peaking power plants are 1320MW and 2163MW respectively.
As of the end of 2023, the Philippines has approximately 2.3GW of solar operating installed capacity. It has sparked significant interest from the solar industry, especially floating solar developers, with Sun Asia and Blue Leaf Energy both announcing plans to build 1.3GW of floating solar power in the country from 2025.
Indeed, the Philippines has considerable solar potential and can install an additional 36.6GW of solar capacity, ahead of Indonesia with 16.5GW and Vietnam with 10.2GW. ASEAN member states have announced or are building several gigawatts of capacity.
